DECEmber MEETINGS
2 DECEMBER: MEMBERS' EVENING
Hemant Jariwala ARPS - Walking … The Cleveland Way
This talk is a photo essay about one of the finest and iconic National Trails in England: The Cleveland Way. The speaker walked this long-distance footpath in September of 2016 at the age of 64. In just 110 miles distance, this footpath offers the iconic landscape of the North York Moors and the sublime beauty of the rugged North Yorkshire Coastline.
Starting from the market town of Hemsley (Vale of Pickering) it passes through hauntingly but beautiful ruins of Rievaulx Abby before enjoying the undulating but remote landscape of the North York Moors, across to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and along the newly designated King Charles III Coast Path to Filey Brigg via Staithes, Runswick Bay, Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Ravenscar and Scarborough.

Pete Ford - Wooden Camera
At its core, the camera is a very simple object. It is a lightproof box with a way to focus light onto a plane using either a pinhole or a lens. It also has a way to capture and preserve that light using a photosensitive medium of film or a digital sensor. Finally, it needs a way to open and close the way the light gets inside the lightproof box.
That said, how hard can it be to make one from scratch, the way the Victorians did, and how hard can it be to recreate the old wet plate process to create images from a scratch-built camera?
In this talk, Pete will go through how he took a pile of scrap wood removed from his front porch several year ago and recreated a Victorian style wet plate camera that actually takes photographs.
The camera will be in the room along with various jigs that were built in order to create the camera in his workshop.
Join us for another travel back in time, and don't forget your top hat!
